“Climate is changing. Reduce your risks”. The self-assessment tool helps small and medium enterprises to first identify their exposure to climate hazards and secondly, measures to reduce negative climate impacts.

The tool was developed in 2016 for SMEs in Turin. It has been used by SMEs in 14 municipalities all over Italy, such as Genoa and Padua.
At the end of 2023, the tool had been used by almost 10,000 users for a total of almost 13,000 sessions (+1000 respect to 2022). It is fully operational and it is used.
Strengths and weaknesses, comparative added value to other similar tools
Strengths:
(+) Self-assessment format builds trust and leaves ownership and responsibility of assessment with the SMEs,
(+) enables the industries and economic sector to drive their own adaptation actions,
(+) location-specific assessment,
(+) stirs dialogue between public administration and SMEs.
Weaknesses:
(-) The tool is primarily meant for SMEs located in urban area; therefore, it does not cover the agricultural sector,
(-) low level of climate risk awareness in SMEs.
Input(s)
Data on floods, winds, rain, hail, temperature, landslides hazards are taken from publicly available sources. Data sources are built into the tool, including google maps integration for selecting site. The users are not required to upload any own data and there is no requirement to pay.
Output(s)
The tool output is a climate adaptation action plan for the SMEs. The tool suggests solution in 3 different categories: management, prevention and emergency.
Replicability: Cost/effort for (new) usage
The tool can be applied relatively easily (around 1 day) in different Italian regions. Users must know the region they work in and the property to fill in a lot of details to the tool regarding the exposure of the buildings, materials used, etc. , they can use the tool directly after watching the instruction video. It is up to the user to decide which actions should be taken depending on the results. In Italy the hazard maps are part of the tool as the team has included them.
Outside of Italy, if the tool would be replicated, the hazard maps would still have to be created for around 10,000 €, otherwise the tool features can be transferred easily.
(The costs are not related to technological modifications on the tool but only on setting the hazard maps. We would need to buy climate data and working hours to set the hazard maps.(At the moment, the tool owners only have the hazard maps only for Italy.)
