Best suited for
The solutions put forward in Barcelona are best suited for being replicated in river mouth zones facing similar environmental and social challenges, particularly areas with high deprivation, social segregation, severe climate conditions, and limited biodiversity habitat, as these mirror the Besòs River Mouth context where interventions are designed to address both human and non-human needs simultaneously.
Stakeholders' role
To replicate this project elsewhere, the co-design protocols for similar interventions recommend involving a multidisciplinary coalition including the local community of all ages, urban planners, architects, designers, botanists, ecologists and local decision-makers. Horizontal governance frameworks further emphasise the necessity of engaging residents, visitors, business owners and other interested populations to ensure inclusive planning and social justice. The non-human voice should also be represented.
Built-in scalable tools
The Barcelona pilot incorporates three core built-in elements that can be replicated in other urban contexts: wildlife viewpoints for wildlife and ecosystem monitoring, bioswales for water management and creation of new habitats and a naturalised climate shelter providing thermal relief and habitat during extreme weather events. These elements are designed to be modular and scalable, adaptable to various site sizes and conditions, and are directly transferable to other urban waterfronts, river mouths or degraded public spaces facing similar challenges.
