Hosting Local Citizen Events is a powerful way for regional and local authorities to tap into local knowledge, build public trust in adaptation plans and solutions, and foster a shared sense of ownership, ensuring that climate resilience is not just a policy goal but a community-led reality.
Charter Signatories can benefit from MIP4Adapt assistance in organising their own Local Citizen Events to showcase how they can meaningfully and systematically involve citizens in adaptation, implementation , and action.
The MIP4Adapt team can provide Charter Signatories with support for the design, organisation, logistics and expert facilitation of the event.
Each event will offer inspiration, peer learning, and visibility, and contribute to a structured culture of participation aligned with the Mission’s objectives.

The call for Charter Signatories to express their interest in hosting a Local Citizen Event with support from MIP4Adapt has now closed. The next call will be launched in 2027.
Local Citizen Events Spotlight
Viimsi, Estonia
The Water Day event, taking place on August 7, 2026, at the Arvamusfestival in Paide, Estonia, is the first Local Citizen Event organised with the expert support of MIP4Adapt. Co-led by Viimsi Municipality and the Estonian Ministry of Climate, the event is designed to translate high-level climate policies into local, community-led realities.
MIP4Adapt citizen events are specifically structured to engage, connect, and empower local communities by making adaptation efforts visible and incorporating local insights to foster shared ownership. Through five days of expert design and delivery support, Estonia's Water Day is integrating interactive methodologies directly from the MIP4Adapt DIY Manual, such as the Stakeholder Fishbowl and Stakeholder Workshops, alongside creative family spaces like the AHHAA Science Theatre. By bringing together citizens, scientists, farmers, water utilities, and policymakers, this collaborative forum ensures that local adaptation planning remains democratic, highly inclusive, and rooted in community consensus.
Lucenec, Slovakia
As a Charter Signatory of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, the City Municipality of Lučenec has received technical support to organise its largest public climate event to date. The event, "Climate Change and Us," will take place from 20 to 22 August and has been strategically integrated into the Lučenec Annual City Days to maximise public participation and community engagement.
The event will focus on Lučenec's most pressing climate challenges, including extreme heatwaves, urban heat islands, and declining rainfall in the city centre. Its main objective is to raise awareness of these local climate risks and encourage dialogue on climate adaptation.
The programme is designed for a wide audience, including citizens, students, and vulnerable groups, while placing particular emphasis on engaging local businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
