Clay shrink–swell (CSS) processes pose an under-recognised but increasing risk to buildings across Europe. Climate change is projected to increase the frequency and severity of deep-soil drought across large parts of Europe, further intensifying CSS-related damage.
The webinar highlights evidence from EU countries showing a consistent pattern of increasing CSS risk alongside inadequate homeowners' insurance coverage. The purpose of this webinar is to draw attention to this emerging risk and protection gap, to support an informed discussion of the implications of climate-driven CSS property damage for housing resilience, insurance markets, and climate adaptation.
