Replicability

Combining nature-based solutions, digital monitoring and traditional land management

Best suited for

This approach is particularly suitable for Mediterranean regions affected by drought and heatwaves and with an increasing wildfire risk. It is especially relevant for areas seeking to restore degraded ecosystems, improve ecological connectivity and strengthen the resilience of agricultural and forest landscapes.

Stakeholders' role

Successful implementation depends on collaboration between public authorities, environmental agencies, researchers, landowners, farmers and local communities. Because much of the restoration takes place on private land, strong partnerships and stakeholder engagement are essential for long-term success.

Built-in scalable tools

The restoration techniques, digital monitoring tools and stakeholder engagement approach can all be adapted to other Mediterranean regions with similar ecosystems and climate challenges. Together, they provide a practical framework for restoring degraded landscapes while strengthening climate resilience.

Funding pathways

The demonstrator was developed through the Horizon-Europe-funded CARDIMED project as part of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. The project provides a model that can support future public and private investment in ecosystem restoration and nature-based solutions.
