Best suited for
This model is best suited for outermost regions – mainly islands – that are facing climate-related pressures on water resources, and hence water-dependent economic activities such as agriculture. This model is especially relevant where local-level climate information, stakeholder collaboration and improved resource management approaches are needed to support adaptation decision-making. The combination of living labs participatory workshops, governance analysis and the SICMA Canarias climate information platform provide an approach that can be adapted to different regions facing similar scenarios.
Stakeholders' role
Stakeholders play a central role in the replicability of the Canary Islands case study mode. Solutions were co-designed through participatory processes. The living labs workshops brought together public administrations, water-sector actors, farmers and digital tool owners to identify barriers and develop adaptation strategies. External actors to the project also contributed through the open tender for innovation. This participatory model allows the approach to be adapted to different regional contexts by incorporating local knowledge, sectoral priorities and local governance structures.
Built-in scalable tools
The SICMA Canarias tool integrates multiple climate data layers, indicators and derived variables, including high-resolution future climate projections at the granular local level. Its structure enables adaptation to other regional contexts by combining climate information with locally relevant environmental, agricultural, economic and social data. The use of downscaled climate projections and a user-friendly digital platform provide a transferable method for supporting climate adaptation planning in other regions. The participatory approach taken with the living labs workshops can also be replicated in other regions to collect valuable insights from different actors.
Funding pathways
The pilot case was developed through the Horizon-Europe-funded ARSINOE project, as part of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
