Replicability
Using traditional and green solutions to protect communities to scale up resilience to floods and wildfires.
Best suited for
This model is best suited for river basins and forested landscapes that face multiple climate hazards, particularly areas vulnerable to both flooding and wildfires. It is especially relevant in Mediterranean regions suffering from water scarcity, where traditional check dams and fuel management practices can strengthen climate resilience while supporting ecosystem restoration.
Stakeholders' role
Successful implementation depends on the engagement of multiple stakeholders. Local authorities, land managers, researchers and community members work together to identify suitable locations for nature-based solutions and support the development of the fire risk management plan. The project also uses a participatory process to identify opportunities for replicating nature-based solutions along the main course of the Lilas river, ensuring that future interventions reflect local knowledge and needs.
Built-in scalable tools
This case study is designed to support replication beyond the demonstration sites. In terms of flood risk control, the method of modelling and multi-criteria analysis for tributary and site selection for the construction of the dams can be replicated to similar regions on larger spatial scales. The fire risk map development followed by prescribed burning approach can also be transferred, beyond the existing pilot sites.
Funding pathways
The pilot case was developed through the Horizon Europe-funded NATALIE project, as part of the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
